5 Tips to Becoming an Effective Communicator

Effective communication is one of the most powerful skills an entrepreneur can master to guarantee success. Business is based upon human connections whether it is in leading your staff and advisory team, marketing your brand, selling your products or working with business partners. Communication is an essential part of business. A common mistake is not learning how to master the art of communicating. In your powerhouse role, you need to be able to communicate your vision, passion, direction and expectations being the 3c's -clear, concise and consistent. As a leader, you must be able to connect with everyone in a way that they understand what you expect of them. By not being an effective communicator your message will be unclear, wrong actions will be taken and could result in serious issues being developed in your business. A simple task is to ask who you are speaking with to recap your discussion, action points and timelines. This way, you are able to assess if you have a meeting of the minds and if you communicated effectively. Individuals process communications in very different ways, don't assume just because you are speaking, your staff understands. Here are some useful tips:

1) Deliver your message but do so in the context of your audience. Know who you are speaking to and what point of reference they are approaching your communication. Keep your message focused. If you need to convey a 30 word point and it takes you 300 words to deliver your message than 90% of what you said is wasteful. Do you want to leave it up to your audience to pick what 10% is useful. Be clear and to the point.

2)Body language is just as important as the spoken word. Be aware of your posture, eye contact and hand gestures. Chances are if you are not making eye contact because you are scanning the room while you speak to someone, they will conclude you are either distrustful or not interested in the conversation.

3)Communicate frequently. Your team, staff and business partners need to hear from you often. Although email is a quick and easy way to communicate, business is based on human interaction and connection. Pick up the phone or hold a meeting just as often as you email.

4)Be sure to ask for a recap. Most times not everyone is on the same page and if someone (other than you) provides a recap, you can get a sense if all understood your message.

5)Be aware of your tone. Evaluate if your tone suits your message and speak appropriately for the topic, the audience and your surroundings. Screaming in the middle of a room isn't a trait of a strong leader.

What You Need To Know About A Career As A Web Developer

One of the problems with talking about careers in IT (Information Technology) is not just the technical jargon that gets in the way of clarity. Those terms can be defined and standardized. The terms that continue to cause confusion are relatively simple ones, like "web developer," that have taken on the wrong meaning. Web developer, web master, web designer - aren't these just different names for the same thing?

Well, no.

The first thing you should do to find out what you need to know about a career as a web developer, then, is get the right definition. A web developer is not a designer, although design sense and some software knowledge in that area both custom essay papers help. Neither is a web developer a hardware specialist, cabling servers together. A web developer is, simply, a software engineer that creates, develops and implements applications for the World Wide Web. These applications generally bring the content of a particular server into contact with a client or end-user, via a web browser. Making all the parts work together, as well creating and/or customizing some or all of the parts, is the challenge web developers face daily, around the world.

Education and preparation

Web developers typically have formal, college-level educations as well as important industry certifications from such standards-focused firms as Cisco, Microsoft, Novell and Oracle. They are also committed to ongoing training as they realize that the technology changes on a daily basis or faster. Coming out of college with a B.S. in Computer Science or a similar field is a common entry point for these positions. Additionally, the best web developers are expected to have training in a number of specific, state-of-the-art programming languages, an area of study that many IT professionals commence long before college custom essay writing.

After college there are some important career-preparatory moves to make, as well. Some companies will offer on-the-job training for new hires, but one way or another entry-level web developers need to start accumulating the industry certifications that employers want to see. The most important are from Cisco and Microsoft.

Into the workforce

Therefore, the foregoing path is the most straightforward one to becoming a web developer: Formal training and a degree followed by the major industry certifications. Newly graduated software engineers without web development experience may find positions with firms willing to use them for developing small components of more complex web applications, under the guidance of more senior employees. However, web developers who can come on board with a certification or two, and the practical experience gained in those courses, will get off to a flying start in their new careers.

Because broad expertise is so important, internships and contractor positions are an excellent way to start a web development career. The more hands-on training, of course, the better, and the reality of IT is that this training will never end. Technology continues to evolve, standards change and tools are updated on a continuous basis, so the "student mindset" is always a positive thing to maintain as a web developer.

Tools in the toolbox

The programming languages and development environments that web developers currently use are separated into the two basic territories of the IT landscape, the server side and the client side. For the server side, there are Java, C and VB.net, along with such scripting languages as Perl, VBScript and PHP. Client side work entails the use of JavaScript, HTML, XHTML, XML and CSS. Although web developers are not designers, familiarity with such high-end web building applications as Adobe Dreamweaver, the on-its-way-out Front Page and the on-its-way-in Expression Web 2 (both from Microsoft) can help a lot.

In that give-and-take zone between the servers and the users, relational database programs are used to collect and disseminate information. MySQL, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server are used in this capacity. Server-side XML is also drafted for document and data transfer in a wide range of instances. Finally, a decent level of knowledge and experience with the three major microcomputer Operating Systems (OS) – Windows XP/Vista, Linux and Macintosh OS X – is required, and reaching the "guru" level in all of them is a common trait of the most successful web developers.

Career paths a-plenty

Web developers have excellent, diverse and constantly growing career path possibilities. One path takes them farther along in a development role, meaning they remain very much involved in hands-on coding and tailoring web services to the specific needs of clients and their site visitors. Another option would have them move into software architecture, a role that is just as demanding but revolves less around customer actions and interfaces, and more around the R-D of high-level, complex software design.

Both of these paths can lead to project management positions, where web developers can expand their vision to encompass large, complex and enterprise-wide endeavors. Some web developers may simply want to hunker down in offices or cubicles and concentrate on coding, because that's what they love to do. Others will find a challenge in making that code work in difficult and/or highly focused ways, while still others will want to manage the people and the processes that will produce a successful, finished project. No one has a crystal ball, but as far as anyone can foresee, there will be no lack of work for web developers in the future, as the world continues to embrace the Internet with undiminished optimism.

Getting Started in Column Writing..

You’ve written many articles for Websites, newsletters and now you’ve even conquered the territory of getting published in a magazine. What’s the next step, you ask? How to I make the editor ask for my work weekly or monthly?
Enter: the column.
Before you march up to an editor’s office or send her unsolicited mail asking to write regularly for a publication, learn all there is to know.
A column is written weekly, monthly or bi-monthly, and must be focused on one particular topic. You have to be consistent in what you write, maintain the same tone of voice, and stay focused on the issue at hand. If you’re writing a column for the writing parent, don’t delve into issues of parenting in general. Your readers will probably be parents who write, and they will be more interested in learning how to find time for their writing, rather than how to take care of their children.
A column can last from three to four months to ten or maybe even twenty. I know of a writer who wrote a column in a leading daily for more than twenty years.
When you decide to write a column, make sure that the topic you choose is of interest to readers and will keep them coming back for more, week after week. If your topic is boring or uninteresting, chances are you’ll have no readers, and the editor will soon wrap up your column with a short goodbye note.
Make sure that you can keep the commitment. Writing a column takes more than just a bright idea and good writing. It needs dedication, discipline and the ability to meet deadlines. If you can’t meet deadlines, you’ll soon be out of a job, and out of the publication—for good. A columnist has to make sure that she provides an on-topic, interesting, timely article each week (or month), interesting enough to make the reader come back to read it.
If you decide to delve into the world of column writing, your best bet would be to start with a regional daily or weekly newspaper. Not only will this market be easier to break into, but will give you a lot of exposure. Columns for cooking, astrology, inspiration and living in the city run frequently in newspapers and are the best places for starting off. However, try to avoid topics that have been done to death. Put a unique and interesting spin to a topic, and you’re bound to get the editor’s interest.
Websites too are now beginning to open up to columns. Just like their print counterparts, Websites, e-zines and even online versions of print magazines ask for original material on a weekly or monthly basis. The biggest advantage of writing online is the short acceptance and publication period.
The best way to query an editor about topic for essay writing a column is by sending clips of your work and your column topic. If the editor likes your query, you’ll be asked to send in an article, and you’ll soon be on your way to publishing glory. Keep in mind though, that column writing is not like writing an article—it’s not *your* convenience and *your* time constraints that matter. The only thing the editor wants from you is a good quality article each week, submitted on time. Do that, and you’ll have a regular income from at least one source.
